Humble roots

Chris Hinds’ journey from rural Texas to becoming a trailblazing leader in Denver is a testament to his resilience, dedication, and passion for service. Born the only child of a single mother, Chris grew up in a modest household where hard work and determination were instilled early on. Despite his father not finishing high school, Chris earned a scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he achieved a degree in computer science, followed by an MBA in Finance and Strategy from SMU’s Cox School of Business. These academic achievements laid the groundwork for his career in software sales and financial planning, where he honed skills in budgeting and strategic decision-making.

Advocating for Change

Chris moved to Colorado in 2007 to assist with a technology startup and quickly fell in love with the state’s outdoor lifestyle. But in August 2008, his life took an unexpected turn. After photographing the Democratic National Convention, Chris was involved in a crash that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Instead of allowing this life-altering event to define him, Chris became a tireless advocate for accessibility, equity, and inclusion.

In 2018, Chris’s advocacy efforts culminated in the passage of the Chris Hinds Act, signed into law by Governor John Hickenlooper. This landmark legislation closed loopholes in disability parking laws, ensuring fair access for people with disabilities. Chris’s dedication to this cause has inspired similar legislation nationwide, further expanding his impact beyond Colorado.

Chris’s civic involvement extends well beyond legislation. He has served on numerous boards and commissions at the city and state levels, as well as on registered neighborhood organizations. These experiences give him a deep understanding of Denver’s challenges and opportunities, allowing him to be an effective and empathetic voice for the diverse communities he serves.

Breaking Barriers

In July 2019, Chris was elected as Denver’s first wheelchair user in public office—at any level of government. His election broke barriers and sparked important conversations about accessibility and representation. In response, Denver undertook significant renovations to make the City Council chambers and other civic spaces accessible to all, demonstrating Chris’s ability to drive meaningful change.

Building an Inclusive Future

As the representative for District 10, Chris is committed to fostering a vibrant, equitable, and accessible Denver. His vision for the city is rooted in creating opportunities for every resident, whether through smart urban planning, sustainable transportation, or championing social justice. Chris continues to serve with a deep passion for ensuring that Denver remains a place where everyone can thrive, regardless of ability or background.
