Safe Outdoor Spaces Ordinance

Chris co-sponsored legislation to maintain Safe Outdoor Spaces, which provide managed outdoor areas for individuals experiencing homelessness. These spaces offer access to essential services like hygiene facilities, case management, and healthcare, serving as a stepping stone to permanent housing. By ensuring these spaces remain available, Chris has provided an immediate lifeline to those in need.

Housing First Advocacy

Chris advocates for Denver’s Housing First approach, prioritizing direct access to permanent housing alongside supportive services as a foundation for stability and independence. This model has been proven to reduce homelessness while improving health outcomes and saving taxpayer money. Chris has championed this approach to create lasting change in Denver.

Shelter Accessibility Improvements

Chris highlighted the lack of disability accommodations in homeless shelters and worked to ensure these facilities are inclusive. Chris’s advocacy has raised awareness of the intersection between disability and homelessness, driving important conversations about equity in public services.

Transforming Homeless Shelter Policies

When Chris was elected in 2019, no homeless shelters in Denver were open all day, allowed partners to stay together, or permitted pets. Under his leadership, shelters now address these barriers, providing people with the support they need to choose shelter over remaining on the street. This policy shift has directly addressed common reasons people avoid shelters, creating a more humane and accessible system.
